You don’t have to disclose all of your health matters and injuries before the whole class. Health should be a personal matter and your instructors respect that. However, your yoga teacher will want to know about any significant health issues you are facing, or any injuries that you may have. Knowing about your health issues may affect the instruction they give you. There may be some poses that are not optimal to your condition, so find a moment to let your teacher know of any injuries, a pregnancy, a neurological condition, bad joints or other structural issues. Using blocks, blankets, or straps is a way of getting your body in the correct posture if your degree of flexibility does not allow it yet. Your instructor loves it when you try and find modifications that help you with your yoga poses. If you don’t feel like you can get a pose right without the use of a prop, there is no judgment for using a piece of equipment to keep you from straining yourself. Yoga is about gradual improvement. However, there is a bit of liberty you can take with the poses you are practicing. Knowing not to veer far off what your instructor is teaching is a great way to preserve the harmony of the class and help everyone have an optimal experience. This means that if you want to practice a posture, make sure that it is similar to what the instructor is teaching. Also, practice a posture that is on the same level in terms of energy output to what is being taught. Usually, near the end of the class is the best time to try something slightly different than the others. Just make sure you are in harmony with the other students and that your teacher is fine with what you are doing.
